Via City of Maricopa

A long-faded vision for a weathered, corrugated metal pedestrian bridge beside the John Wayne Parkway overpass is finally becoming reality.
The city today announced that construction will begin in the coming weeks on the long-awaited crossing, which would span the Union Pacific Railroad tracks and connect Maricopa Road for pedestrians and cyclists.
“The bridge is about connecting our community,” said Mayor Nancy Smith in the announcement. “It will give students a better route to and from school, open new pathways to our businesses and knit together the heart of the Heritage District as we continue its revitalization.”
Work will take place on weekdays during daytime hours and is expected to wrap up by summer 2026. Drivers should expect limited lane closures in the area during construction.
