CASA GRANDE — Residents were happy at a packed Casa Grande City Council meeting on Tuesday night that saw councilmembers overwhelmingly vote in favor of city control for some land at Casa Grande Mountain.
Councilmembers voted 7-0 in favor of an Open Space designation regarding 304.5 acres just east of Casa Grande Mountain Park, south of Interstate 8, approximately half a mile west of Lamb Road and north of Arica Road. An associated zone change from Planned Area Development to Urban Ranch was also passed unanimously.
The city and Valley developer George Chasse Sr. had a contract for decades regarding the land, but the city declined to renew his option. Supporters of preserving the mountain had expressed concerns that the acreage in question could potentially be used for luxury residential development. Chasse was present at the meeting.
