As the city draws nearer to its centennial celebration in September, its staff took some time to reflect on the ups and downs of its local economy.
Coolidge started as an agricultural community, with a farming tradition that started with ancient Sonoran Desert people who created irrigation systems around 1500 BCE. They’re also credited for building the great house, now part of Casa Grande Ruins National Monument.
Arizona Territory attracted homesteaders who farmed and ranched the land before statehood.
In 1924, the railroad through Coolidge brought dependable transportation for cargo and people. Richard J. Jones founded the community and is credited with platting the original townsite 1925, which grew commerce and business.
