Approximately 389 acres of state land at East Hunt Highway and North Gantzel Road in San Tan Valley will be developed for a housing and retail area called North Copper Basin, following the approval of the Pinal County Board of Supervisors.

Retailers and others are “standing in the wings waiting for projects like this,” Supervisor Mike Goodman, R-San Tan Valley said. “They’ve already been calling our office asking about this particular project.”

Single-family homes will transition to a multi-family area in the middle and a 64.8-acre retail and office area at the intersection. D.R. Horton and Pulte Homes are expected to be the builders.

The land is expected to go to auction in the second quarter of next year. The board approved rezonings, a non-major Comprehensive Plan amendment and a Planned Area Development overlay in three separate votes on Sept. 17. Supervisor Rich Vitiello, R-Maricopa, voted no on each item.
