Following an executive session, a split Scottsdale City Council voted 4-3 on Sept. 9 to vacate the agenda item that, if approved, would have authorized the filing of a lawsuit against the state of Arizona challenging the “legality and constitutionality” of Senate Bill 1543, otherwise known as the “Axon bill.” Mayor Lisa Borowsky joined Councilman Adam Kwasman, Councilwoman Maryann McAllen and Councilwoman Solange Whitehead in the vote to cancel the agenda item, while Vice Mayor Jan Dubauskas, Councilman Barry Graham and Councilwoman Kathy Littlefield voted against.
Graham said he was “stunned” and “shocked” about the decision, arguing that the vote to vacate was akin to voting “for 2,000 apartments” to rise in Scottsdale. For her part, Borowsky suggested “there were too many unanswered questions on the next steps” and that she was not prepared to commit to a direction at this time.
