A new single-family housing development in Flagstaff’s Switzer Mesa area will move forward after the Flagstaff City Council declined to take action on a citizen petition seeking to halt the project.
Fifty-six people signed the petition, which asked the council to “Stop development of land” on the parcel. But members of the council said on Tuesday, Nov. 4, that the developers of the Shadow Pines subdivision have the right to build on the property and the council has no legal authority to intervene. They did not advance the petition for any future discussion.
Councilmember Anthony Garcia briefly recounted his own experience of trying — and failing — to stop the development of a parcel of land in the city.
“That’s where I learned about by-right development,” he said.
