In a video message delivered to her San Francisco constituents today, Nancy Pelosi announced she will not seek reelection to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2026 — bringing to a close a nearly 40-year congressional career.
Pelosi, 85, first elected in 1987, served multiple terms as Speaker of the House — breaking historic barriers as the first woman to hold that role.
She spoke of her “grateful heart” and how she intends to devote her final year of service to the constituents who sent her to Congress.
Her decision marks not just a personal transition, but a generational shift within the Democratic Party — one of its most powerful legislative figures is stepping aside, creating space for new leadership.
