The vision for Chandler’s future is changing, but there is one possible change the city wants no part of.
“One of the committee members didn’t like that the word ‘light rail’ was in there, and we agreed — because we never talked about light rail — it’s not time,” said Lauren Schumann, the city’s principal planner. “We’re not dense enough. We don’t have the foot traffic in order to [justify] light rail, so we removed any reference to light rail.”
State law demands that municipalities must update their General Plan every 10 years. It was last updated in 2016, so it must be updated this year. The plan must be ratified by voters, which is scheduled to happen in the Aug. 4 primary election.
