Gov. Katie Hobbs vetoed the Republican tax conformity package Friday morning, saying leaders have no plan to pay for it and urging them to “stop the political games.”
Hobbs, Senate Minority Leader Priya Sundareshan and House Minority Leader Oscar De Los Santos said they have introduced bills with the governor’s Middle Class Tax Cuts Package — with the exception of the provision related to auto loans. And no one is exactly sure how the lack of conformity will impact Arizonans, who can start filing taxes on Jan. 26
“I think we’ve all made it clear where we are, and I’m hopeful now we can actually start talking and moving forward to give Arizonans the relief they need, the certainty they need,” Hobbs told reporters at a press conference Friday.
Hobbs said Arizonans will not have to file amended tax returns if the Legislature passes her tax package, but the plan in the Democratic bills excludes a provision included in the tax forms created by the Department of Revenue at her direction in November. ADOR staff told lawmakers on Wednesday that Arizonans will have to file amended tax returns no matter which plan gets signed into law.
