Former Flagstaff hotel opens as affordable apartments

Housing Solutions of Northern Arizona (HSNAZ) is opening its latest effort to convert former hotels into affordable housing in Flagstaff, adding 29 apartments meant to provide workforce housing.

The nonprofit recently purchased the former Western Hills Motel near the intersection of Route 66 and Ponderosa Parkway. The site had already been renovated into a mix of studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments by the seller, and HSNAZ is now in the process of renting the units. HSNAZ combined funding from the city’s Adaptive Reuse Bond Program and private financing to make the purchase.

A week after the apartment listings were first posted on HSNAZ’s website, the organization had received 43 applications and was starting to vet potential tenants. HSNAZ CEO Devonna McLaughlin said she expected the first residents to move in in the next few weeks.
