Independent candidate Hugh Lytle said he would donate his yearly salary to charity if elected governor.

He also aims to expand the tax credit for donating to a qualified charity.

Lytle talked about his initiative during a press conference outside the Department of Economic Security on Monday. His “Champions for Charity” program would double the Qualifying Charitable Organizations (QCO) tax credit from $506 to $1,000 for a single filer and $1,009 to $2,000 for married and joint filers, he said.

The tax credit is available for contributions to charitable nonprofits that provide basic needs to Arizonans who receive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), are low income residents of Arizona, or individuals who have a chronic illness or physical disability.

“Arizona’s nonprofits really do the work that government cannot do, especially when budgets are tight like they are right now,” Lytle said. “Think of food banks in Benson. Think of clinics in Cottonwood that keep seniors going. Think of organizations like Teen Lifeline, prevention for our youth against teen suicide.”
