U.S. short millions of homes

A new White House economic report estimates the United States is short about 10 million homes and argues rolling back regulations could speed up construction and expand supply.

Housing leaders in Arizona say the state’s shortage remains severe. The Arizona Association of Realtors estimates Arizona has been short roughly 50,000 homes a year since 2021 and needs about 120,000 new rental units annually, as population growth and major employers — including chipmaker TSMC and a wave of data centers — continue to boost demand in the Phoenix area.

Association representative Sindy Ready said streamlining the process could help developers build faster and expand housing choices, including more entry-level ownership options.
