An early summer? Lawmakers announce month long recess for budget negotiations

By Kiera Riley | State Affairs

Lawmakers will take an extended break this session following the transmission of the GOP budget package to Gov. Katie Hobbs.

The House approved a motion to recess until June 1, continuing the Legislature’s yearly pattern of taking breaks while budget negotiations unfold with the Hobbs’ administration.

Speaker Steve Montenegro said on the House floor today that Republicans introduced the motion because Hobbs walked away from budget negotiations, and while lawmakers could convene earlier if they deemed it necessary, there wasn’t any pending legislation requiring their immediate presence.

“We need the governor to come to the table,” Montenegro said.

Meanwhile, Hobbs’ bill signing moratorium is still in effect. And the governor’s spokesman, Christian Slater, said it would remain in effect until there are “good faith” budget negotiations.
