FLORENCE — An area that includes much of the historic downtown was nominated by the Town Council to be an “Opportunity Zone” for development and job growth.
It is a census tract generally bounded by the Gila River to the north, Butte Avenue to the south, Dogwood Road to the east and Plant Road to the west. Incentives here could help “jump start” Territory Square, the town’s plan for developing the Gila River corridor, Councilmember Jose “Mo” Maldonado said.
Opportunity Zones, offering federal tax incentives to spur revitalization, were established under the 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act. The town had the option of recommending one of two eligible census tracts. The other was an area farther northwest between Arizona Farms Road and the Gila River.
