Avondale updates Transportation Master Plan

By Joshua Fenty | West Valley View

Avondale City Council recently approved an update to its Transportation Master Plan, laying the groundwork for road, transit, bicycle and pedestrian improvements into 2050. City officials said the updated plan will help the city prepare for future growth while addressing traffic congestion.

“Many of us here probably get a lot of questions related to traffic and congestion,” he said. “By adopting this plan, it allows for us to take a lot of the variables that were provided to us into consideration while making those decisions.”

According to Engineering Director Kimberly Moon, the City Council’s adoption of the updated Transportation Master Plan will allow the city to manage growth proactively, preserve transportation corridors and compete effectively for regional, state and federal funding.

The new plan amends the Transportation Master Plan adopted in 2017 to reflect completed projects and current conditions, while providing a 25-year multimodal transportation strategy for the long term. Working with updated regional growth assumptions, the forecast included in the new master plan indicates a 50% population increase, a more than 55% housing increase and an over 70% employment increase. Moon noted that the city revisits the Transportation Master Plan approximately every five years, depending on how much the city has changed since the last review.
