Monsoon Season
Are you prepared?
Every year between the middle of June through the end of September, Arizona experiences its famous Monsoon Season. During this period of changing weather patterns, the normally dry air becomes dense and humid as air currents bring in new moisture from the south. This results in higher chances for evening dust storms, thunderstorms, heavy rain, and flash flooding. Monsoon storms can be unpredictable and dangerous for those unfamiliar or unprepared with this type of weather phenomenon. In particular, there are 3 primary monsoon dangers that you need to be aware of:
- Dust Storms
- Lightning
- Flash Floods
Fire Season
The Pinal County Open Space, Trails, and Regional Parks Department will initiate a fire ban from May 1, 2026, through September 30, 2026, for all Pinal County-managed parks, trails, and trailheads.
The fire ban prohibits campfires, fire pits, and charcoal grills, including their use in developed campgrounds and picnic areas. However, using gas/propane grills in designated areas such as semi-developed and developed camping sites is still acceptable. Smoking is prohibited in all areas.
Thank you for doing your part to help prevent wildfires and keep Pinal County’s parks, trails, and open spaces safe for everyone.
Pinal Emergency Notification System

What is PENS?
PENS stands for Pinal Emergency Notification System. It is Pinal County’s tool to notify residents of any impending or current emergency where action by residents may be necessary. PENS utilizes the Genasys Emergency Management software.
A PENS alert notifies residents when an emergency is immediately impacting their community, and they may need to take action. These notifications are usually reserved for more severe situations where life or property may be threatened. They can also be used in situations such as a weather alert or wildfire, where time is of the essence, and immediate notification is imperative.
Alerts are issued through phone, text, and/or email, depending on how you registered to receive your alerts. PENS can also be indirectly posted to County or departmental social media channels and can be sent according to any geographic boundaries necessary or be used as a countywide message blast.
Be sure to register for the Pinal Emergency Notification System (PENS). Once you register and create a profile, you can select your preferences for how and when you will receive alerts.
Avoid Hiking in the Heat
To have an awesome experience on the trails, it’s best to follow a few simple rules, be prepared, pack out your trash, stay on the trail, avoid interacting with wildlife, and be considerate of other hikers, this will ensure that you and your fellow hikers will be able to enjoy the many incredible trails the Superstition Region has to offer.
