Gov. Katie Hobbs and several county sheriffs are renewing their push for the federal government to reimburse Arizona nearly $1 billion for border security costs.
The group claims the U.S. Department of Homeland Security owes about $192 million for using local law enforcement agencies to help fight border-related crime and more. State officials also say the feds owe more than $710 million to cover the cost of state and federal operations such as Local Border Support, Taskforce SAFE and Operation Desert Guardian.
“Our local law enforcement and state agencies have been on the front lines, spending nearly $1 billion over the past five years to stop drug trafficking, human smuggling, dismantling transnational criminal organizations, and other border-related crimes because the federal government has failed to act,” Hobbs said in a statement.
