Heftier resident input expected for Scottsdale general plan as voter-approval fears emerge

After two previously failed attempts to draft and pass a state-required general plan, some Scottsdale officials are seeking to “do it right” this time around.

“My concern is that it’s too weak — it just really does not give the continuity and the decisiveness that we need in a general plan to give the citizens any comfort. I have heard this from a lot of people across the city,” Scottsdale Councilwoman Kathy Littlefield said during a Jan. 12 meeting. “My fear is we’re going to go through the same thing we did last time — put this before them and they say no.”

The city’s resident review committee tasked to draft a general plan update has ended, and the planning document is set to begin a lengthy road through an approval process before it can be added to the next ballot to be voted on by residents. The group was comprised of chairpersons from Scottsdale’s boards and commissions. Ms. Littlefield seeks to bring in people from outside the government umbrella through an application process to continue the foundation already laid.
