Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega reinstates mask mandate one day after taking office

Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega reinstated a city face-covering mandate on Wednesday, one day after he was sworn into office.

Former Mayor Jim Lane had rescinded the city’s mask mandate in September, three months after it was first put in place during Arizona’s summer COVID-19 surge.

Ortega’s decision comes as Arizona ranked highest in the country for new-case and death rates.

Ortega told The Arizona Republic on Thursday that his proclamation “strengthens” Gov. Doug Ducey’s “Mask Up Arizona” campaign and Maricopa County’s existing mask mandate. 

The decision was met with mixed reviews from people on Twitter, and praise from the city’s largest employer, HonorHealth.
