Arizona Republicans leading the nation’s war on voting aren’t hiding their motives, which is to keep most people away from the polls.
Republican Rep. John Kavanagh of Fountain Hills called it “quality votes.” And by that he means votes to keep them in power for the foreseeable future.
“Not everybody wants to vote, and if somebody is uninterested in voting, that probably means that they’re totally uninformed on the issues,” Kavanagh told CNN.
“Quantity is important, but we have to look at the quality of votes, as well,” added Kavanagh about the raft of GOP-backed voting bills making it through the Arizona Legislature.
Arizona has the awful penchant of grabbing headlines for the wrong reasons. In this case, Kavanagh is raising eyebrows for articulating exactly why Republicans want only their own to vote.
“Democrats value as many people as possible voting, and they’re willing to risk fraud,” said Kavanagh, chairs the chairs the Government and Elections Committee.
“Republicans are more concerned about fraud, so we don’t mind putting security measures in that won’t let everybody vote — but everybody shouldn’t be voting.”
But that’s just it.
