BLS: Working from home up big during pandemic but shows class, education divides

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

The number of Americans working from home almost doubled during the coronavirus pandemic.

That is according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

According to BLS, 42% of U.S.employees worked from during 2020 and the pandemic.

That is up from 22% in 2019 before COVID shuttered workplaces, events venues and scores of public facing businesses.

College-educated and higher-paid, white-collar workers are more likely to be working from home than lower-paid and less educated employees, according to BLS.

The U.S. agency said 65% of employees with bachelor’s degrees or higher worked at home during 2020 with offices and professional workplaces closed because of COVID.

Conversely, 19% of workers with high school education were able to work from home during the pandemic.

That mirrors trends among sectors with workers in office-based sectors such as finance, technology and professional service more likely to be able to work at home than employees in manufacturing, retail, hospitality and transportation sectors.
