Former Pima County Republican Party chairman Bob Westerman announced earlier this month his intent to run for a seat in the state House of Representatives for District 11.

Westerman’s announcement follows a series of candidates jumping into different races in the district that extends from the City of Maricopa to northern Pima County. Current LD11 Sen. Al Melvin announced his intent to seek the Republican nomination for governor next year, while Maricopa’s own Steve Smith, currently serving in the House, announced his plan to run for a second term in the state Senate.

Freshman Rep. Adam Kwasman, R-Oro Valley, has not formally announced his intentions for the 2014 election, though Leach said in a press release announcing his run that he expects a “competitive primary,” thus necessitating the early candidacy announcements to begin fundraising and campaign organization efforts.
