Holiday traveling? Jonathan Udell, Rose Law Group cannabis department co-chair, highlights why packing pot for the trip ‘should be avoided’

According to the TSA, official federal policy toward marijuana and marijuana-derived products is that they remain illegal and prohibited from aircraft. But inspectors are not actively screening for the drug, the agency says.

It’s the time of year when everyone is celebrating a holiday, and with all that cheer can come stress — from planning, from shopping, from overeating and of course, from travel.

But even with the legalization of marijuana in Arizona and 18 other states and Washington, D.C., traveling with yuletide givings of green can be fraught, especially when traveling by plane.

“Cannabis consumers should exercise caution when traveling between states or near international borders. Although the TSA adopted a more lenient posture towards cannabis in recent years, if its agents encounter marijuana, you should expect them to contact federal law enforcement. Because marijuana remains a Schedule I substance under federal law, traveling with it should be avoided.”
