The recreational marijuana text amendment approved by the Surprise City Council last month narrows what type of marijuana businesses can apply for a license in the city while simultaneously expanding where those businesses can set up shop.
By a unanimous vote Nov. 16, the council set into motion revisions of part of the city’s land development ordinance. Primary among the changes is the requirement the potential marijuana businesses apply for a dual medical and recreational license instead of choosing one to focus on.
“Ultimately this will allow it to be part of a dual state licensing facility, so in order to have a recreational marijuana dispensary it will have to be combined with a medical marijuana facility,” said Jason Moquin, a planning manager with the Surprise Community Development Department.
