Tempe to discuss ‘options’ for land where Arizona Coyotes propose new arena

Tempe leaders will meet in a closed-door session Monday to discuss the future of the city-owned property where the Arizona Coyotes propose to build a new arena and entertainment district.

The meeting comes just more than a week after Glendale threatened to lock the team out of Gila River Arena if it didn’t pay $1.3 million in taxes, including $250,000 owed to the city, and other unpaid balances to ASM Global, the management company that runs the arena.

The team quickly paid up, blaming the late payment on “an unfortunate human error,” but now arena officials want the Coyotes to prepay the rest of the 2021-2022 season to make sure the team doesn’t fall behind again.
