Union Pacific pushes back on Mesa development

A proposal for a new industrial development in Mesa, which Union Pacific Railroad officials said would interfere with its plans for a new train line, is heading back to the drawing board.

Mesa planning officials in October approved a rezoning that would pave the way for more industrial development in an increasingly industrial part of town.

Union Pacific officials argued the vote would hinder 3-year-old plans to build 6 miles of rail to support the industrial development in southeast Mesa. The developer and city officials maintained that the rezoning vote wouldn’t stop the railroad company from striking a deal with the property owner to privately buy the land it needs for the railroad.
