National Democrats are moving to help Rep. Greg Stanton defend his Phoenix-area congressional seat in this year’s election.
The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the arm of the party that works to elect Democrats to the House of Representatives, added Stanton, D- Ariz., to their list of vulnerable seats amid the upcoming 2022 elections.
Stanton, a former Phoenix mayor who currently represents Arizona’s 9th Congressional District, which includes parts of Chandler, Mesa, Tempe and Phoenix, is among the most recent additions to the DCCC’s Frontline Program, which is intended to draw attention to Democratic campaigns in competitive districts that might require more donations or party support in order to remain in office.
Stanton joins Rep. Tom O’Halleran, D-Ariz., on the DCCC Frontline list.
“This is one of the toughest and most important congressional races in the country and we need Congressman Stanton to continue his work to build a strong Arizona economy and protect our water,” the Stanton campaign told The Arizona Republic in a written statement. “We’re building one of the strongest grassroots campaigns Arizona has ever seen to win in November.”
In a Friday fundraising email to supporters, Stanton acknowledged that he is now “officially in one of the most competitive seats in the House.”
“The Democratic majority in the House hinges on my reelection — which means the Build Back Better agenda, voting rights, and other common-sense investments in Arizona depend on my race,” Stanton said in the email. “We have to start working NOW to win this thing.”
