When the cost of the Civic Center was first estimated in 2018 and later approved in the 2019 bond election, planners inadvertently missed some expenses that, along with inflation, are now driving up the total cost of the re-do.
The initial $27.3 million budget did not account for the aging infrastructure beneath the Civic Center discovered only after construction began. Nor was the cost of lighting and audio/visual equipment factoredn into the project.
Inflation also has been a driving force in the escalation of the total Civic Center renovation cost as prices for construction materials were rising well before the project broke ground in late 2021.
