East Mesa’s massive Red Mountain Park is set to land more sports fields as part of a multimillion-dollar expansion.
City leaders on Monday unanimously voted to spend up to $2.8 million on the initial steps of an expansion for the more than 1,100-acre regional park off Brown Road between Power and Ellsworth roads. The approval covers the costs for planning and connecting city water to the area under construction.
The City Council still will need to sign off on the cost for the entire expansion, which is expected to run an additional $27.3 million. The expansion, which is slated for some 70 acres between the community fishing lake and the desert landscape butting up to 80th Street, calls for:
10 new multipurpose fields.
Four new baseball and softball fields.
Two new restroom facilities.
Relocating the disc golf course to create 18-hole north and south courses.
