The Gilbert Town Council officially hired Phoenix assistant chief counsel Michael Hamblin as the town’s new in-house attorney after contracting with a private firm for decades.

The council voted, 7-0, to approve a contract with Hamblin, who has worked for Phoenix for 27 years, most recently serving as assistant chief counsel and managing five attorneys. He starts his new job in Gilbert on June 24.

Hamblin’s background includes work in civil and criminal law, zoning and development, employment law, contracting, public records and oversight of outside counsel in litigation.

The contract sets Hamblin’s annual salary at $150,000 with benefits including payment of professional dues, travel expenses for annual conferences and “reasonable” entertainment expenses.
