With the cost of living soaring in the past month, some Sun Cities residents are feeling the sting at the most basic level — their home.
While the majority of homes in both age restricted communities are owned by those residing in them, there are a small number of rentals in the Sun Cities. Rental costs have been going up steadily, but appear to have taken a sharp turn upwards this year. The situation is such that a Sun City renter is trying to get some relief for vulnerable residents.
Michael Hernandez has lived in Sun City more than five years and has seen his rent increase annually about $40. But this year his rent went up $100, and that was the straw that broke the camel’s back for him.
“The price gouging against the Senior citizens who reside aboard a rental property is totally and completely unacceptable,” he said. “It’s highway robbery and then some.”
