Phoenix looks at more homeless shelters, affordable housing redevelopments

By Mike Sunnucks | Rose Law Group Reporter

The Phoenix City Council will be updated on efforts to address rising numbers of homeless and transient persons in the city.

City staff will update the council’s community and cultural investment subcommittee on April 6.

The city is looking at ways to provide services to the region’s growing homeless population.

That includes looking at opening new and smaller shelters throughout Phoenix and redeveloping city owned properties to offer more affordable and other housing options.

The city is also looking at how to address homeless camps and encampments and best practices for addressing those and other homelessness challenges.

Western cities such as Phoenix, Los Angeles, Portland and Seattle have seen marked increases in homelessness and housing insecurity during the pandemic.
