A plan by LG Energy Solution, a subsidiary of South Korea-based electronics giant LG, got final approval to build its $1.4 billion battery plant in Queen Creek from the town’s Planning and Zoning Commission on May 11, which clears the way for the plant to eventually become the town’s largest employer.
The battery plant is supposed to create 2,800 jobs, according to a development agreement the Town Council approved in March.
LG Energy Solution plans to construct 11 buildings, totaling about 1.5 million square feet, on a 120-acre site. The project will be at the southeast corner of Ironwood and Pecos roads, about half a mile north of Germann Road.
The existing Pecos Road does not extend all the way to the planned plant and will be built along with the development.
The company bought 600 acres of land at an Arizona State Land Department auction in April, after announcing plans in March to build the plant.
Construction is scheduled to begin this summer, and the location will be the first in North America to produce cylindrical batteries for electric vehicles.
