Phoenix hopes to give this historic corner new life

Forty years ago, a south Phoenix local could visit the 24th Street and Broadway Road intersection to play Pac-Man and Asteroids at Gabe’s Broadway Arcade, grab a burger and milkshake at Rose’s Drive In and pick up groceries from Rainbow Market.

Now, most of the land at the intersection is vacant.

In the 1970s and 1980s, family owned businesses catered to nearby residents. But by the early 1990s, the two cross streets gained notoriety among city officials and news outlets for violent crimes and drug sales.
