Katie Hobbs talking tough at the border? Sure, that’s totally believable

Opinion: Katie Hobbs has a new ad, assuring us that she’s got a border plan that “will keep our border secure.” Oh, come on, Katie.

Katie Hobbs must be in more trouble than I thought.

She’s out with a new campaign ad, highlighting her plan to secure the border.

The problem is, she doesn’t have one. Or not much of one anyway. But to be fair, it’s not the job of Arizona’s governor to secure the border.

Yet there she is, striding through the desert, flanked by Santa Cruz County Sheriff David Hathaway and Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos.

“Katie Hobbs will deliver whatever resources are needed to keep you safe, my team safe, our state safe,” Nanos says, in the ad. “She’s not here to politicize our border. Katie Hobbs has a plan and solutions.”

“I’m tired of the talk,” Hathaway adds. “Katie Hobbs is about action. Katie Hobbs will keep our border secure.”

Hobbs didn’t sound so hawkish in the primary

It all sounds great, until you realize this is the same Katie Hobbs who in April had to walk back her support of President Joe Biden’s plan to lift the public health restrictions that have been used to expel asylum seekers since the start of the pandemic.

“Title 42 isn’t working,” she replied when 3TV/CBS 5’s Dennis Welch asked her if Biden’s  plan to reopen the border to asylum seekers was the right one.

She later offered what she called an elaboration of her answer, one that sounded more like a U-turn.
