Mayor Smith talks future road improvements without Prop 469

MARICOPA — In the wake of voters rejecting a new sales tax that would have gone toward major road projects, including one that Maricopa residents have desperately wanted, Mayor Nancy Smith said other methods of improving traffic conditions will have to be pursued.

During Tuesday’s Maricopa City Council meeting, Smith said she is sad Proposition 469, which would have created a sales tax in Pinal County to fund the Pinal Regional Transportation Authority, didn’t pass this election, even though Maricopa needed it to expand State Route 347.

“However, I want you all to know how proud I am of the city of Maricopa,” she said. “There was a super majority in the city of Maricopa of voters who voted to approve Prop. 469, well in the high 60s in some precincts, so I’m very, very proud of you…. It was hugely important; unfortunately, not enough to cover all the whole Pinal County, but we tried hard.”
