Gov. Katie Hobbs pledges to push for $40 million scholarship program for Dreamers

Gov. Katie Hobbs told a group of undocumented students Wednesday that she will push to fund a scholarship program available to any student regardless of immigration status during what is expected to be a tough budget negotiation with the Republican-led state Arizona Legislature.

Hobbs, a Democrat, hosted students with the community group Aliento, which brings together high school and college students from mixed-status families to advocate on behalf of undocumented students, also knowns as Dreamers.

Aliento played a key role in getting a voter referendum on the ballot last November to grant Dreamers in-state tuition in Arizona. Voters passed Proposition 308 with a narrow majority.

The scholarship program is “right in line with the will of the voters who voted to ensure that you would have in-state tuition to help provide more accessibility to college,” Hobbs said.
