The Goodyear Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously Wednesday to approve a request for a special use permit for a U-Haul Moving & Storage facility at the northeast corner of Van Buren Street and 137th Avenue.
“So what we did find is it would be not that wouldn’t be detrimental to the neighborhood or general public,” said Steve Careccia, a Goodyear city planner. “It’d be compatible with the existing and permitted uses in the area. We’re looking at an area that is predominantly commercial, light industrial, really no single-family residential. The closest is 430 feet from the site to the south.”
According to a staff report, the four-story building is 117,872 square feet with 1,064 climate-controlled self-storage units, and a one-story, 18,616 SF U-Box building in where empty and full U-Box containers can be stacked and stored.
The facility’s height will be taller than most U-Haul units since setbacks from will constrict the builders horizontally, according to a representative from RKAA Architects. The height increase will help the company get the typical number of units in the lot (1000).
