MARICOPA — A new transportation plan is in the works to address future infrastructure needs along the western edge of Pinal County.
Last Thursday, the city of Maricopa hosted the first public open house meeting on the West Pinal-Maricopa Area Transportation Plan at the Maricopa Library and Cultural Center.
The plan is part of a collaborative effort between the city of Maricopa and Pinal County to study the needs of the area through 2040.
The study outlines the area as a major connection between Phoenix and other cities including Yuma, Gila Bend and Casa Grande via Maricopa-Casa Grande Highway.
As of 2020, the area encompasses 286 square miles, 22,713 homes and almost 70,000 people. Using 2020 population data, the study also projects an increase in population and households in the area by 36% between 2020 and 2030 and another 18% between 2030 and 2040.
