The Flagstaff City Council took a step back Tuesday night from requiring new, stricter energy-efficiency construction for new homes. The group decided instead to come back to the issue on July 16 for a possible decision.
The council is looking at three options: Leaving building requirements for new homes the same as they were in 2006; changing them to 2009 international recommendations (the middle-of-the-road option); or bringing them to 2012 international standards (the most demanding option).
Councilmembers voted 6-1 (Coral Evans opposed) to approve a suite of other building codes and leave aside ones geared to making homes more weather- tight and energy-saving.
