Wickenburg said no Monday night to a promise of federal money to help build an affordable housing project near the intersection of Saguaro Drive and W. Wickenburg Way.
About 60 residents attended the regularly scheduled Town Council meeting to express their opinions about the possibility of a 208-unit apartment complex. After close to two hours of discussion, including public input, advice from the town attorney and many questions from councilmembers, the measure failed on a 5-1 vote.
According to the Council agenda, housing developer Gorman & Co. was selected by Maricopa County to receive $10 million of the county’s $65 million share of federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) monies to help build apartments for households “which earn between 30% and 80% of the AMI” (Area Median Income). Like other projects of this type, for the money to be awarded for a project in Wickenburg, the Town must enter into to an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the County. The vote Monday night was whether to enter into the IGA.
