East Mesa children’s home Sunshine Acres soon will be able to expand its on-site equestrian program as a result of a new $1-a-year lease from the city.
The agreement, approved by the City Council on Monday, temporarily will add about 4 acres to the 100-plus acres the non-profit already owns at Higley Road and Red Mountain Loop 202 Freeway. The lease is good for 10 years, with an additional two five-year options.
“We’ll have some fencing, maybe some parking, then a horse turnout and corral space on the parcel,” said Sean Sloan, Sunshine Acres’ former executive director, who stepped down to take another job last week. “We’re looking forward to expanding that program for our kids.”
