TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) – 13 News has an update on an Afghan refugee we’ve been following since his arrival in Tucson nearly three years ago.
“Zabi” was just granted asylum in the U.S.
The interpreter spent 10 years risking his life working for the U.S. military. When the U.S. left Afghanistan, Zabi was left behind. But the story doesn’t end there.
It’s a story of faith, hard work, and hope.
It started when the United States pulled out of Afghanistan, and Zabi was among hundreds of thousands of people trapped, facing torture, imprisonment or death.
A U.S. Marine he was embedded with for 10 years and an Arizona immigration attorney helped get Zabi on a plane. With one bag of belongings, Zabi escaped to Tucson. That was three years ago when Zabi started his new life and applied for asylum.
