The Paradise Valley Planning Commission has approved a minor special use permit amendment that will allow Phoenix Country Day School to construct a new music building.

The commission approved the request at its Tuesday, Oct. 15, meeting in a 6-0 vote. Commission Chair Karen Liepmann was absent from the meeting.

The new music building will be in the same area as the old building near the western part of the campus, 3901 E. Stanford Drive, and will be 4,964 square feet larger than the existing building, according to a staff report. Additional lighting improvements will be made to the surrounding area.

The existing music building will be demolished and replaced by the new building. The new music building will perform the same functions as the current building.

To qualify as a minor amendment, the applicant cannot add or change use, add more than 5,000 feet of floor area, have any significant material effect on adjoining properties or change the architecture.

“The current music building was built over 40 years ago and it really needs updating. It’s cramped, it’s acoustically challenged and most importantly it structurally needs some major repairs and so the school decided that it would be better to rebuild it,” said Jordan Rose of the Rose Law Group, which represents Phoenix Country Day School. “It’s not changing in height, it’s not changing in any outside activities or parking calculations. This is strictly a music classroom building for the students.”
