Via City of Mesa

Mesa is eyeing three adjoining vacant parcels downtown for affordable senior housing as that population in the city is outpacing the rest of the country.
The properties are on University Drive near Center Street and total .92 acre, across the street from the senior center. Council last week voted 6-0 for the purchase, which was on the consent agenda. Vice Mayor Francisco Heredia was absent from the Nov. 4 meeting.
“Seniors are one of the fastest growing populations that are entering into homelessness and through our Balanced Housing Master Plan as our consultant looked at our demographics and compared them to the nation in general we are growing faster in our senior population than the nation,” said Candace Cannistraro, deputy city manager at the Oct. 31 council study session on the item.
