FLORENCE — Almost 1,900 acres — until recently masterplanned for 6,760 houses — will now be covered in solar panels.
The Pinal County Board of Supervisors agreed to sever 1,887.5 acres from a housing development 10 miles south of Arizona City and rezone the land for Enel’s Sonak Solar Project LLC. The property, currently a bermuda grass farm, is west of Sunland Gin Road.
Sonak is different than most of Pinal’s many other solar farms because of its large size and remote location. It has hardly any neighbors for miles to the west, north or east. But there is Silverbell Estates, about 250 households, a mile to the south.
Rose Law Group founder and president Jordan Rose told the Board of Supervisors that Sonak intends to annex into the Arizona City Fire District. Pagan added, “We’re doing a special annexation of that parcel so that the fire district can get there. Because they’re only 10 minutes away.”
