Glendale asks for exit in casino battle

Glendale and its allies want to end one of the lawsuits they filed to block the Tohono O’odham Nation’s plans for a West Valley casino, but that hardly means the fight is over.

Glendale, the state, Valley tribes and the Tohono O’odham are mired in a complicated legal battle over the casino, with many related cases. And, even though the city has asked a judge to close this one case, it may choose to file a suit later about the same issue. Glendale wants to exit a dispute between Glendale, the state, the Gila River Indian Community and the Department of Interior over whether the tribe may take land near Glendale into the reservation system. The tribe purchased a field near 95th and Northern avenues in the early 2000s and announced plans to build a casino there in 2009.
