Recreation expansion in Gilbert

By Tom Blodgett | Gilbert Independent

Gilbert officials, park leaders and residents gathered Thursday morning to break ground on phase II of Desert Sky Park, a major expansion aimed at adding athletic fields and inclusive recreational amenities in the town’s southern area.

Mayor Scott Anderson said the project reflects long-awaited investment in south Gilbert and a broader effort to ensure the town’s park system serves all residents.

“The residents that live down here have waited for such a long time to have these facilities,” Anderson said. “These are unique facilities so that we can make our park system available to everyone and that’s what we’re emphasizing.”

Phase II will significantly expand Desert Sky Park with multiple new amenities designed around accessibility and community use. According to town staff, the project includes five multiuse athletic fields, playgrounds, a fenced inclusive playground, a splash pad, pickleball courts, sand volleyball courts, a tennis court and a basketball court.
