A new study has found that Arizona has built up the nation’s third-highest amount of utility-scale energy storage as of 2025 and handily led the nation for its annual rate of growth in that energy storage capacity.
The findings come from the Q1 2026 US Energy Storage Market Outlook recently published by the Solar Energy Industries Association alongside Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, which compiled the data used for the report. It tracked the nation’s storage capacity in both the utility-scale battery energy stationary storage (BESS) market and in the behind-the-meter (BTM) market, which includes residential and business installations.
Court Rich, director of Rose Law Group’s energy & utility infrastructure department, says “Battery energy storage is rapidly deployable, cost effective, flexible, and an essential part of making sure Arizona has the power it needs to continue to attract investment. It is no surprise that Arizona is seeing such rapid deployment of battery energy storage because this technology lets us store our amazing sun resource and spread out its benefits throughout the day. We are seeing longer and longer durations of storage deployed which is just increasing its benefits for all Arizonans.”
