As more and more bills file through the chambers, legislators are actively negotiating several key proposals to reshape state policies on reproductive rights, excessive speeders and state elections.
Not only are we anticipating a battle between two of Arizona’s top abortion rivals, but we are also expecting new arguments from Fondomonte Arizona, the Saudi-owned alfalfa farm sitting right at the top of Kris Mayes’ public nuisance hit list, which could make a big splash on groundwater use in rural areas. Beyond all that, we’re eagerly awaiting a ruling on the Arizona Independent Party’s controversial name change — a decision which could have a huge impact come Election Day — and watching how Arizona’s prisons handle court-ordered receivership.
Here are five issues we are watching this week:
Right to Life vs. Reproductive Freedom for All
According to the Legislature’s calendar, two “competing” groups will host events on Thursday. Arizona Right to Life will hold a press conference about preborn rights at 9:30 a.m. on the House lawn. The Arizona chapter of Reproductive Freedom for All will also hold their advocacy day. Several bills on both sides of the issue have already been introduced this session by a number of legislators.
